Cancer drug from the saffron flower

Cancer drug from the saffron flower
A drug derived from the saffron plant can destroy cancerous tumors in one treatment - Scientists at the University of Bradford (UK) said.
Research by Professor Laurence Patterson has led the transformation of colchicine found in saffron plant into a "smart bomb" capable of aiming directly at any solid tumor without danger to the cells other healthy.
Colchicine has long been known to contain anti-cancer components, but the substance can be harmful to the human body. To avoid this damage, the scientists attached a "tail" on the chemical colchicine and deactivate it until it reaches the cancerous tumor.
Here, the "tails" were cut by MMP, an enzyme in the tumor. The cut tail activates the drug to attack and break down the blood vessels supply oxygen and nutrients to the tumor. Tests on mice showed half of tumors vanished completely after a single injection.
Cancer medicine called ICT2588 can kill many kinds of cancer, including breast, prostate, lung and colorectal. It is expected that the trial will be conducted over the next 18 months and if successful, this drug will have on the market in 6-7 years.
